So today Dj Playboy hit me up and asked me about some dj battle I hadn’t heard about, and I let him I knew nothing about it. Apparently, a few djs heard a rumor about it last night or so, and wanted to know more info on it, and of course, they hit their source for all things Houston and HipHop, HoustonHipHop.com. Of course, we knew nothing about, even though it was supposed to be at the House Of Blues, which is supposed to be one of Houston’s premier music venues? Odd.
I look up the usual sources of promotion these days – Facebook, MySpace, Twitter – and saw nothing about it, only what Playboy had posted less than 24 hours ago. Of course, no matter how much I’m out in the streets, I saw nothing out there. No flyers, posters, or even word of mouth. Now granted, there’s not that big of a battle/ turntablist scene here in Houston anymore, but still, you figure someone would be talking about it? I mean, there’s djs like Killa Kut, Mosa, Hypnotize, Gonz, Rockwell, Noble, Baby Jae, Comp 1, Klinch, and more, that would have been interested in battling.
I’m starting to get the feeling this isn’t a battle for everybody. Hhmm….
I get home, and jump on the net to see if I can Google more details on this thing, and nothing. Finally, I stumble across THIS SITE that has very little information on it other than what’s on the long ass flyer. So I see this OTHER SITE, and boogie on that way. No more new information there, plus the addition of the Dj AM (RIP) and Travis Barker Fix Your Face mix playing in the background, which I can’t turn off – kinda annoying, by the way – and the long ass flyer again.
So, this event is supposed to be a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and is being hosted at the House Of Blues in Houston? But when I Google “House Of Blues Houston dj battle” there’s no entry on the first page of results? What about the official House Of Blues website? Nope, nothing. Hhmm….Maybe it just got bumped off the page since the event is tonight? Sure, maybe that’s it.
Gee, maybe this event ISN’T for everybody? Maybe it’s geared specifically at one crowd? Hhmm…
Why is it so hard to find information about an event that is a fundraiser, and a dj battle? Both a good cause, and a rare event in Houston post 2000? It’s not like there are dj battles several times a year around here; you figure this would be a big deal? Sure, I have no clue who this main dj is, or who most of these other djs or judges are, and I’m pretty sure this is geared more towards the dance and middle Eastern/ Asian crowd, but still. You figure someone would have been in charge of spreading the word about this.
Look, to House Of Blues and the promoters of this event: you dropped the ball on this one. Why would an event of this kind be such a big secret? I’m sure you’ll have some kind of crowd out there, but I would think you would want to extend the invitation to as many people as possible? Promote to a wider audience that would effectively expose you to a bigger crowd, better turn out, more money raised? Now, this is just my opinion, and maybe I’m the one who’s late, but how would you explain the other djs I know who would have really been interested in competing in something like this? Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter are not enough to advertise events, folks, I would suggest going out there and putting in face time with people in the streets through flyers, posters, and at the very least word of mouth. I could understand if this is a small event catered to your niche scene, but this is a battle and a fundraiser, this screams “perfect opportunity to get as many people there as possible.”
Who knows, maybe this isn’t a dj “battle” like you would traditionally think. Maybe instead of a battle like THIS, it’s more of a mix off like THIS. Either way, please learn to promote y’all.
Hey, just my two cents,

Oh, and check out one of the top 5 best battles ever from the early 90’s.

Update* – I turned off comments due to someone posting under fake screen names taking shots at me. I encourage whoever it is to come out and let me know who you are, and we can talk about it in public, instead of hiding behind a screen name.
